The Highway Patrol Service consists of 2,174 commissioned officers who provide police traffic supervision on approximately 225,339 miles of rural highways. THP troopers conduct fraudulent document investigations, are partnered with drug and explosive detection canines, are members of Civil Disturbance Management Teams, comprise the majority of the DPS Dive Team and SWAT team, provide dignitary protection for the Governor and other state and national dignitaries, and provide forensic mapping of crime scenes.

Jeff and Aunt Dora
After being introduced by his former teacher, Mrs. Cathy Bartley and by his Aunt Dora Torres, Jeff Silba, son of Jesse and Francis Silba of Haskell, spoke to the students, faculty, and staff of Rochester JH on Friday, May 2, 2008.

Jeff is pictured with his Aunt Dora Torres.

Jeff Silba, Army Specialist
He came home on leave in April and flew back to Iraq
for nine more months there.

After that, he still has 3 more years of duty to the U.S. Army.

Jeff's future plans are to become a state trooper, join the Austin Police Department and work his way up to Austin Swat Team. (Only 19 states have SWAT teams)

in the U.S. Army, stationed in Northern Iraq.

Students asked him why he joined the Army and he said because of his two cousins who were already in the military and were his role models.

The students, faculty, and staff had lots of questions and Jeff gave them great and informative answers.
Throughout his talk, Jeff was all smiles and was very positive.

Jeff said that small boys are often "head of their family" and carry weapons to defend their families. The situation might be of a father who had died or might just be away for a time.
In either case, the young boy of the family becomes the head, able to even tell his own Mother what to do and when she can go or come.

Jeff talked about his 24/7 job with the Army and of how the soldiers learn to trust and
protect each other at all times. He spoke of his unit as being most like his family.

Mosul history
Mosul needs to be wandered about in. It is rich in old historical places and ancient buildings: mosques, castles, churches, monasteries, schools, most of which abound in architectural features and decorative works of significance. The town center is dominated by a maze of streets and attractive 19th century houses. There are old houses here of beauty. The markets are particularly interesting not simply for themselves alone but for the mixture of types who jostle there: Arabs, Kurds, Assyrians & Turkomans.
